Gingivitis is a bacterial infection of the gums that is reversible. Patients with gingivitis may have puffy, red, sore and or bleeding gums. Bad breath may also be present as a result of this infection.
75% of the population has some form of gum disease, but the majority do not realize it.
If detected early it can be controlled with scaling, antimicrobial therapy and more frequent cleanings.
Besides puffy, red, sore and bleeding gums seen in gingivitis, a person with gum disease may have loose and or shifting teeth along with bad breath and a bad taste.
